The Hamilton County Jail is overcrowded. according to the Enquirer. This is true. The question asked in the article is whether we need a new jail to prevent this. The deeper question that goes unanswered here is whether we are locking up too many people. Non-violent drug offenders in need of treatment more than punishment often have no one willing to pay their bail to release them into friendlier surroundings. Diversion and electronic monitoring are discussed in the article, but only briefly. But these too are band-aids. It is a cultural question we will need to face soon, if it isn't too late already. What are we willing to do to help people who are addicts?
